Biography
Dr George Ely (C.Psychol) started in 2026 as a lecturer in the school of psychology, teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Prior to this, he held numerous posts at Bangor University including an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship. His published research spans cultural transitions of athletes, the benefits of exercising in nature for babies and mothers, and athlete mental health. His research typically has an applied focus and aims to positively impact the related population. George is currently conducting research with an aim to move athlete mental health screening from a predominantly reactive process to a more efficient and effective proactive approach.
Research and scholarship
Currently, all my active research falls under the umbrella of mental health in sport. I have worked closely with the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Professional Cricketers' Association to monitor mental health markers across the professional population, to explore what well-being means for cricketers and then assist in creating a bespoke series of workshops designed to facilitate improved well-being, to create a well-being check-in tool, and to identify the profiles of individuals most likely to experience specific mental health conditions. See publications for notable outputs related to this research.
I am generally interested in any research of an applied nature within the broad field of sport and exercise psychology.
