Biography

Dr Shemane Murtagh is a Senior Research Fellow at Keele University and an experienced researcher with a background in physiotherapy and health sciences. Shemane (Principal Investigator) leads the Data for Impact (DfI) Project alongside Professor Jonathan Hill (Chief Investigator). The DfI is a national project that supports physiotherapists to collect and use routine data monitor patient improvement, evidence clinical effectiveness, and contribute to the creation of a national database. Shemane’s work also focuses on the development and validation of outcome measures, including a short-form MSK-HQ. Shemane has a strong track record in applied health research, health data strategy, and implementation, and works closely with national stakeholders to strengthen the evidence base for MSK care delivery.

Before joining Keele, Shemane held research positions at the University of Brighton, London South Bank University, University of Strathclyde, and University of Stirling focused on applied health research and physiotherapy. During her time at Brighton, she led the early delivery of the Data for Impact (DfI) Project, working closely with private sector partners to embed data-informed approaches in clinical practice. Her professional background in physiotherapy, data collection, and the development and validation of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) underpins her commitment to bridging research and practice, with a particular focus on using real-world data to drive service improvement and enhance patient outcomes.
