Biography
Chris Gidlow is a Professor of Health Services Delivery, with a strong focus on health equity and the needs of socially disadvantaged populations. He joined Keele University in 2024 from Staffordshire University, where he was Director of a research centre focused on health and social disadvantage. Chris holds a BSc in Applied Biology (Newcastle upon Tyne), an MSc in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Public Health (University of Bristol), and a PhD on inequalities in exercise referral (Sheffield Hallam University).
His academic interests evolved to include environmental determinants of health and the design and evaluation of interventions for those facing multiple disadvantage. He later earned a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Birmingham to support this broader research agenda.
At Keele, Chris’s role is in partnership with Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT), where he works closely with health professionals and clinicians on service-based research. He also supports colleagues at Keele in development of impact case studies for the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
Research and scholarship
Chris Gidlow has a longstanding interest in health inequalities and a track record of research that spans public health, environmental influences on health, and support for marginalised communities. Chris has also led National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)-funded work focused on cardiovascular disease risk identification and management, as well as city-wide evaluations of national programmes aimed at improving services for people experiencing multiple disadvantage.
