Biography

Bernadette is a nurse by professional background and came to Keele in 1997 as an NHS New Blood Research Fellow to undertake her PhD in Social Policy. This was a mixed methods study into the role of counselling in reproductive medicine. In 2000, Bernadette joined the School of Social Relations as a Research Fellow. She moved to the School of Medicine as a Lecturer in Gerontology in 2005, before joining the Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences in 2012.

Research and scholarship

Bernadette's main areas of interest are around health inequalities, multi-morbitidy - particularly in relation to chronic pain and mental health - environments and ageing across the life-course. I have experience of inter-disciplinary large scale projects.

Bernadette's expertise is in qualitative and mixed-methods research informed by sociological and psychological theories. With colleagues, she has worked to stengthen the involvement and engagement of patients and the public in research. Bernadette also enjoys working with research students and currently supervise four doctoral students.

Bernadette is a member of the Mental Health and the Stratified Care for Musculoskeletal Patients Research Programmes in the RI and sits on the Executive Committee of the British Society of Gerontology and served on the Editorial Board of Ageing and Society.

Bernadette is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She currently teaches on the 'Research Methods in Health' and the 'Fraility: Healthcare Ethics and Law' modules of the Masters in Medical Science, and on the Clinical Trials Short Course.
