Biography
Aminu is a clinically active General Practitioner and an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Primary Care at the Keele University School of Medicine. His research interests focus on improving and reducing global disparities in Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) indicators in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as addressing ethnic inequalities in access to MNCH services and outcomes in the UK. He has expertise in risk prediction, prognostic modelling, and research on big data electronic health records. Aminu served as the Practice Lead and Co-Principal Investigator for a UK-wide NIHR-funded trial (https://asymptomatic-trial.org.uk/) at Parkway Medical Centre in Middlesbrough, UK.
Aminu's academic qualifications include a medical degree (MBBS) from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria (2011), Master's in Public Health (MPH with Distinction) (University of Dundee 2016), and PhD in Tropical Medicine/Global Health (University of Liverpool/Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine 2020). He trained as a General Practitioner in Newcastle Upon-Tyne (Lead Employer Trust, 2022).
As part of his PhD research, he developed a statistically derived obstetric Early Warning Score (EWS) model, which successfully predicts the risk of maternal death and severe morbidity (near-miss) among women admitted to obstetric wards in low-resource settings. This model was effectively implemented as a patient monitoring tool in a pilot trial involving three tertiary care hospitals in Nigeria.
He is currently part of the global health and MNH research team in the School of Medicine and is actively involved in teaching (dissertation supervision) of the Master's in Public Health (MPH Program) students.
