Dr Eva Giroud

During my undergraduate studies at Edinburgh (in English Literature) I became fascinated with examining the cultural values reflected in texts and soon wanted to draw on a wider range of social and political theories to examine culture and politics more broadly. This led me to study Critical Theory at the University of Nottingham, first at MA then at PhD level. After finishing my studies I worked at Nottingham for three years, in the department of Culture, Film and Media, teaching modules on cultural theory, digital media and political activism.

My work today explores the relationship between politics and digital media; I’m especially interested in the opportunities that are created, and problems that are posed, for activists by new technologies. I look in particular at the dynamic between on- and offline activism, with a focus on the work of environmental, anti-capitalist and animal rights activists. More broadly I’m interested in cultural theories that question and challenge existing relationships between humans, animals and the environment. At Keele I currently convene the first year module Understanding Culture and second year module Researching Media, Communication and Culture, and also teach on Making the News and the MA in Global Media and Culture.
