MDS-10010 Understanding Culture, MDS-20019 Analysing Culture
I have been a lecturer in Media, Communication and Creative Practice at Keele University since 2014. Immediately prior to this I worked at the University of Nottingham for three years, after completing my PhD and MA at Nottingham’s Centre for Critical Theory and an undergraduate degree in English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. My doctoral project explored the conceptual provocations offered by anti-capitalist, environmentalist and animal rights practice, and I have continued to research this theme as well as examine broader debates about activist uses of digital media.
In disciplinary terms, although I have found a very happy home in Media, my research also intersects with critical/cultural theory and feminist science studies. My current research looks in particular at the dynamic between different communication platforms used in activist practice, with a focus on anti-racist, environmental and vegan activism. I’m also interested in cultural theories that question and challenge existing relationships between humans, animals, technologies, and the environment and have published (or have forthcoming) work on these themes in journals such as Theory, Culture & Society; Social Studies of Science; Convergence; and the Feminist Review.
Most of my teaching focuses on cultural and media theory. In addition to introducing students to core social and political theories of the media, I also enjoy engaging in research-led teaching that explores contemporary theories about environmental politics and tensions surrounding digital media technologies. I especially enjoy teaching theory, as I struggled with getting my head around certain concepts and debates when I began my studies – and I still remember the moment when things ‘clicked’ for me and hope I can do the same for my students.
