Biography

Growing up as a British expatriate of South Asian descent in the former colony of Hong Kong, I have always had difficulty in positioning my identity. My personal dilemma is the backbone of my motivation to research the identity constructions of other like-situated individuals.

I graduated from Keele in 2015 with a first class honours degree in Human Geography and Sociology. My undergraduate dissertation researched the identities and interactions of ‘Third Culture Kids’ – defined loosely as the children of expatriates who have grown up in a country outside of the passport they carry.

Research and scholarship

My thesis will explore identity construction in postcolonial Hong Kong - with a particular emphasis on long term expatriates. It will eventually be expanded to other countries in Southeast Asia which have previously been held under colonial rule.

Supervised by Dr. Deirdre McKay and Dr. Lisa Lau.
