Biography

I completed my Ph.D at Keele in 2016, having undertaken a study into the petrogenesis and eruption of peralkaline felsic magmas in the Azores archipelago. Prior to this, I completed an MGeoSci degree (also at Keele), with a final year dissertation focussing on the pre-eruptive magmatic system of Kelut volcano, Indonesia.

 

I have subsequently taken on a technical role in which I manage our geochemistry laboratories, acting as co-Chair of the Lab Committee, providing teaching and research support across the school, as well as supervision and training in specialist methodologies and instrumentation. I am involved in teaching on a number of modules and fieldtrips across geology, geoscience, environmental science and chemistry, and have in recent years taken considerable interest in scholarly activities. As such, I am currently completing a part time MA in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. I also act as an editor for the Student Journal of Natural Sciences and am involved in a variety of outreach activities.

 

I have practical experience in a range of analytical techniques, including XRF, electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), SEM-EDX, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, transmitted and reflected light microscopy, FTIR, ion chromatography, and particle size analysis.

Research and scholarship

Overall, my research lies within the fields of petrology, geochemistry, and volcanology. My work focusses on using the surface deposits of volcanoes to understand where magmas come from, how they change over time, and why they erupt in the way that they do. I typically employ a range of techniques, including: major/trace/volatile element and isotope geochemistry, mineral chemistry, petrogenetic modelling, thermobarometry, and quantitative textural analysis.  I utilise these techniques in combination to reconstruct the magmatic plumbing systems of active volcanoes, identifying pre- and syn-eruptive magmatic processes and generating P-T-fO2-X-t models for their evolution.

 

I have in recent years become more involved in pedagogic pursuits and am currently conducting research into the potential benefits associated with the application of guided, interactive image-based teaching within the context of thin section petrography.
