Biography
Dean holds a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science (2006), an MSc in Sports Science with a focus on Exercise Physiology (2009), and a PhD in Exercise Physiology (2014), all from the University of Chester. During his doctoral studies, Dean served as an Exercise Physiology Laboratory Technician at the University of Chester. From January 2013 to November 2023, Dean was employed at Staffordshire University as a Technical Specialist and part-time Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science. In November 2023, Dean joined Keele University as a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology.
Research and scholarship
Dean's research primarily focuses on exercise-induced muscle damage and its influence on physiological responses to exercise. His doctoral work examined the physiological, metabolic, and perceptual responses to sub-maximal and time-trial running under conditions of muscle damage. He also has a research interest in the benefits of eccentric exercise, the effectiveness of recovery strategies, and the time course of recovery following intermittent team sport match-play.
Teaching
Dean currently lectures on the undergraduate programmes in Rehabilitation and Exercise Science, and Sport and Exercise Science, as well as the postgraduate programme in Physiotherapy at Keele University. His teaching focuses on sport and exercise physiology, research methodology, evidence-based practice, and the supervision of research projects.
