Six Strings, One World - A personal & musical journey

‘Six Strings, One World’ is a musical journey shaped by Xuefei’s path against the odds, from encountering the classical guitar by chance in China to finding her place on stages around the world, through a story of leaving, searching, and ultimately discovering a sense of belonging through music.

The first half, ‘Searching,’ begins in China, where the classical guitar was almost unknown. It traces Xuefei’s pioneering route through new places, unfamiliar cultures and moments of uncertainty, as she searches for where she might belong and for the musical voice that would become her own.

The second half, ‘Discovery,’ turns back towards her roots, exploring the connections between cultures and musical traditions. Here, the guitar becomes a meeting place between East and West, between the familiar and the new, and between the music of different worlds. Spanning a career of music‑making in more than 50 countries, this is a story of discovering connection not in one place, but through what we share.

About Xuefei Yang - Xuefei Yang is one of the world’s leading classical guitarists, known for her distinctive artistry and international career. Born in Beijing, she became the first guitarist in China to study at a music school and has since performed in more than 50 countries, appearing at major venues and collaborating with artists including Ian Bostridge, Roberto Alagna and Sir James Galway.

Her recent schedule includes recital tours across the United States and Australia, debuts at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and Colorado Music Festival, and a return to Wigmore Hall. Her recordings have earned international acclaim, chart success and multiple awards, with Gramophone recognising her as a leading innovator of her generation. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4, the BBC Proms and China Central Television, and is listed by Classic FM among the top 100 classical musicians of our time.

Xuefei has been a popular performer at ArtsKeele since 2014, and we are excited to bring her to the New Vic as part of a jointly promoted concert.
