Professor Toby Helliwell

From Monze to Medicine, an unexpected journey of Research and Global Health

Professor Toby Helliwell, Professor of Primary Care and General Practice, will present his inaugural lecture on Thursday 27th November.

The lecture entitled "From Monze to Medicine, an unexpected journey of Research and Global Health" will begin at 6pm in room SIH LG0.30, in the Denise Coates Foundation Building.

Professor Helliwell grew up in the small town of Monze, Zambia where his early curiosity about health and medicine first began. This interest led him to study medicine at the University of Birmingham, followed by clinical work in emergency medicine in Australia, and anaesthetics in Birmingham, before undertaking GP training with an academic focus in North Staffordshire and Keele University. This period marked a turning point in shaping his research interests in polymyalgia rheumatica and giant cell arteritis.

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Helliwell will explore the journey of this research, highlight ongoing and future investigations into these under-researched conditions, and reflect on the wider potential of primary care research through trials and data driven approaches. He will also touch on his parallel work in global health development and its influence on his career in general practice.

All are welcome to attend.
