Bold, underline, justified text and italics

Use bold to emphasise text, especially for a name, a call to action, a deadline date or another key piece of information, but use it sparingly. Bold is the primary form of emphasis for online writing.

Italics should be used very sparingly; they are generally only used for the titles of books, journal articles, lectures/talks, and other publications.

Reading italics on screen is particularly tiring for eyes. If you wish to emphasise a word or phrase, use bold instead.

Underline is not to be used on the current site at all as traditionally it is used to format links. Use bold to emphasise text,  but not underline.

Readability research shows that fully justified text is harder to read than left-aligned text on the web due to random spacing between words that justify adds and web technologies aren't optimized to handle 'smart' justification of sentences yet.

It is also against our styleguide, so please do not use justify text at all.
