Biography
Hollie completed her PhD in Film Studies at Queen Mary, University of London in 2015. She has taught in the Film Studies departments at Queen Mary, King’s College London and the University of Sussex.
Before joining Keele in 2022, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow on the AHRC-funded ‘Ministry of Information’ project, focusing on the Ministry’s Films Division during the Second World War, and on the ‘Jill Craigie: Film Pioneer’ project, exploring the career of filmmaker, writer and feminist scholar Jill Craigie.
In 2024, Hollie was awarded an AHRC Early Career Research, Development and Engagement fellowship for her project 'The Four Corners Film Workshop: Independent Filmmaking and Exhibition in East London, 1975-1990'. She is currently leading this project in collaboration with the Four Corners Film and Photography Centre in Bethnal Green.
Research and scholarship
My research focuses on British film and cultural history, and explores issues of gender, class, realism and community-based film practice.
I am currently leading an AHRC-funded project focusing on the history of the Four Corners ‘cinema workshop’ in Bethnal Green in the 1970s and 1980s, which has included a series of community film screenings and an exhibition celebrating Four Corners’ 50th anniversary in 2025.
I am working on a book exploring feminist histories of British social realist cinema, and a co-authored book about the societies for film practitioners in mid-twentieth century Britain leading to the formation of BAFTA.
Teaching
I am currently teaching undergraduate modules including Gender and the Cinematic Gaze, British Social Realism and Global Popular Cinema.
