How a gift in your Will can support research

Research at Keele is aiming to improve diagnosis and testing for men at risk of prostate cancer.

The project, led by Dr Sarah Gosling, has been funded by Prostate Cancer UK, and aims to improve the accuracy with which doctors can test for unusual changes in
prostate tissue, which could be an indicator of cancer risk.

The study aims to understand the building blocks of prostate tissue to determine how
early prostate disease and cancer develop and progress, studying the tiniest, most intricate details of prostate tissue that might reveal any differences.

Identifying the markers which can indicate whether the patient is at risk can lead to early detection of cancer.

Dr Sarah Gosling, Postdoctoral Research Associate, said: "As cancer becomes more common, it's increasingly important to find better ways to detect it early and predict how it might progress."

"Our research will provide a new way to understand how cancer starts, with the work aiming to find new markers that can tell us if cancer might form."

A gift in a Will is helping fund cancer treatment research.

Researchers at Keele, led by Professor Josep Sulé-Suso, have developed a new method to identify single cancer cells in blood and can be applied in screening and diagnosing cancer earlier, assessing how cancer is responding to treatment, and detecting early cancer recurrence.

The support provided by a gift in a Will from Mr Desmond Howe is supporting a full-time PhD student to further this work so patients with most types of cancer can benefit.
