Kornelia Herms - Selected Work
Join us for a captivating showcase of selected works by Newcastle-under-Lyme-based artist Kornelia Herms, featuring a collection of oil paintings and giclée prints.
Herms’ artistic practice explores the methods of paint application, focusing on layering and the transitional moments between colour, light, and form. Her work often presents partial representations of real places or imaginative blends of multiple locations, inviting viewers into a space where intention meets chance.
This exhibition marks Herms’ first presentation at Chapters, a venue she is eager to explore. Known for displaying her work in diverse settings—from empty historical buildings and development sites to traditional galleries—Herms sees Chapters as an exciting opportunity to experiment with new ways of engaging with space and audience.
Artist Statement
During my working process, I am exploring memories and places with a particular focus on the architecture and landscape. I experiment with the methods of paint application and its influence on the mood in the painting. I am mostly working with layers and transition moments. Transitions of colours, images, light, as well as exploration of intention and chance. The resulting image is often a partial representation of an existing place, an impression of a place or a combination of more than one location.
I am a Polish-born artist educated in both Poland and the UK. While sustaining my painting practice I have also explored working with drawing, projection and art installation. I actively co-organize and exhibit, I am one of the directors of DUST Rising CIC (community interest art company); exhibitions include AirSpace Gallery Studio Artists shows 2014 – 2017, Dust Rising shows 2018-present, Wirksworth Festival, Stoke Art Map, Potteries Museum, Shoji Inspired for Appetite 2020, New Vic Theatre, Three Counties Open 2024.
