Woodland Nature Trail

Stop I

point-i

This is Lake 7, the first of two lakes that are at the furthest reaches of the University's estate. There was a third lake here but that is now overgrown and filled in.

Point-i2 Itis a tranquil spot and it is not unusual to see a Grey Heron stalking small fish in the shallows. The lake is rapidly filling in though.

The lake is surrounded by stands of Hybrid Black Poplars Populus x canadensis, and some Wych Elm Ulmus glabra. The rhododendrons and Larch that surrounded the lake were removed in 2015. This has opened up the area and it is to be replanted with native species.

Just beyond the camera is the remains of a water wheel.
