Searching for Journal Articles

Databases and E-Journal Collections

You can search or browse these online collections to find e-journal articles.

In some cases the full-text of an article will be available directly from your search results to view online. If the full-text isn't available from your search results, look for the @Keele logo and click this. This will search all our e-journal collections and provide a link to the whole paper if available, or direct you to where a paper copy may be found in the Library's print journal collection.

EBSCO
Academic Search Complete
contains the full text of over 8500 journals covering almost every area of academic study. The EBSCO database also includes European Views of the Americas: 1493 to 1750.

JSTOR
A searchable full text archive of over 130 important journals. JSTOR is not specifically a collection of American Studies journals but does include titles such as: African American Review; The American Historical Review; American Literature; American Quarterly; the Journal of African American history; the Journal of American History and Reviews in American History.

LION – Literature Online
A fully searchable library of more than 350,000 works of English and American poetry, prose and drama, plus biographies, bibliographies and key criticism and reference resources, including full online access to the MLA International Bibliography.

NEW Oxford Journals
A collection of more than 250 electronic journal titles from Oxford University Press with full-text access from 1996 to the latest issue for all titles. 

Project MUSE
An online database of more than 200 journals from non-profit publishers. Abstracts and some sample articles are available to view online.

ProQuest 
Includes access to the British Humanities Index, an international abstracting and indexing tool for research in the Humanities. It indexes around 400 Humanities journals from the UK and other English-speaking countries.

A collection of over 1500 journals from Taylor & Francis Online with full-text access and backfile content from 1997 onwards for most titles.

A collection of over 1400 journals from the Wiley Online Library with full-text access and backfile content from 1997 onwards for most titles.

The e-journals listed below are just a few of the relevant titles which the Library provides access to. Please see our e-journals search to find out what other titles are available.

From off-campus you will need to log-in to access the full-text of articles within these journals. Look out for a link called “institutional log-in” or "Shibboleth log-in", select the UK Federation and then Keele University and log in using your Keele username and password. American Historical Review
The American Historical Review (AHR) is the official publication of the American Historical Association (AHA).The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1895 (volume 1).

The American Journal of Political Science
The official publication of the Midwest Political Science Association. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1975 (volume 19) to the current issue.

American Literature
Each issue of American Literature contains articles covering the works of several American authors, from colonial to contemporary, as well as an extensive book review section.  The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1929 (volume 1).

American Politics Research
Articles in APR cover a wide range of fields concerned with American politics, including: voting behavior, political parties and public opinion. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1973 (volume 1) to the current issue.

American Quarterly
American Quarterly publishes essays that examine American societies and cultures, past and present, in global and local contexts. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1949 (volume 1).

The Journal of American History
The Journal of American History is a leading scholarly publication and journal of record in the field of American history. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1914 (volume 1).

 

Open Access Journals

These journals are freely available to access and contain full-text articles.

49th Parallel 
49th Parallel is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary e-journal devoted to American and Canadian studies covering history, literature, film, popular culture, politics, photography, the visual arts, and their relation within an international comparative framework.

Americana
Americana is the journal of American popular culture, which features scholarly research papers in written for an academic audience and covering the medium from 1900 to the present day.

Dawsonera
An expanding collection of ebooks purchased by the Library which includes some titles relating to American Studies.
You will need your Keele username and password to access individual ebooks and to access the collection off-campus.

Early English Books Online
The full text of more than 125,000 books in English from 1473 to 1700, including some published in the USA.

A large collection of ebooks with many texts on all aspects of American literature, culture, history and politics.

Eighteenth-Century Collections Online
A vast, digital library of items published between 1701 and 1800, including every significant English-language and foreign-language title printed in the United Kingdom along with thousands of important works from the Americas.

MyiLibrary
A collection of ebooks purchased by the Library which includes some titles relating to American Studies. The collection is developing and new titles will continue to be added.

Project Gutenberg
A large collection of freely available online texts in all subjects although predominantly literature.

You may also like to look at Google Books. Whilst this does not provide access to the full text of many books, you can access limited previews for some titles.

A news and business service which includes around 12,000 publications, including worldwide, national and local newspapers.

Provides the searchable full-text of articles published in around 30 UK newspapers including The Times, Telegraph, Guardian and The Independent.

The Times Digital Archive
Search the complete digital edition of The Times from 1785-2006. The entire newspaper is captured with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos.

The British Library ETHOS project provides electronic access to research theses from many UK universities.

Index to Theses
A searchable listing of theses with abstracts accepted for higher degrees by universities in Great Britain and Ireland since 1716. You can only access the Index to Theses from computers on the Keele network.

NDLTD – Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations
Details of theses and dissertations from universities in the United States and worldwide.

A Biography of America
Charting the history of America through videos and timelines, A Biography of America covers American history from 30,000 BC to 1999.

A Chronology of US Historical Documents
Read the transcripts of key speeches throughout American history, such as, the first inaugural address of George Washington, and key events, The Declaration of Independence, presented in chronological order from pre-Colonial times to the Present day.  

Digital History
Covers American history from its beginnings into the 21st Century using a variety of multimedia and documents to outline the events in key eras.

The US Government’s official web portal.

Google Scholar
The most famous web search engine can search for academic journals and literature too.

Hypertexts
Provides links to the full-text of key American literature from authors, such as, Henry Adams and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Making of America
A digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction.

RefWorks
Reference management software which you can use to import, manage and save references from your research, whether they are from books, library databases, journals, web pages or other sources.
