Exploring the evidence for ancient glaciations in the Garvellachs
Richard Waller recently joined a team of scientists who have been under-taking a long-term study of the evidence for Pre-cambrian glaciation found on the Garvellach islands in Western Scotland. This chain of uninhabited islands located to the south of the Isle of Mull contain evidence of up to 37 glacial phases that occurred during the Cryogenian Period between 850 - 630 million years ago. Richard has been invited to examine possible periglacial features that would indicate that these glacial periods were terrestrial in nature and he's already looking forward to his next visit!
