Consultancy and training

The Basin Dynamics Research Group offers consultancy services to the petroleum industry with rapid reporting in both hard copy and intranet (.htm) format. Expertise within the group forms the basis for integrated basin modelling in 3 and 4 dimensions.

Structural Geology

  • structural interpretation of seismic data
  • sequential structural restorations in 2D and 3D
  • fault juxtaposition analysis (Allan mapping)
  • fault/stress analysis in 3D
  • finite strain and fracture prediction in 3D

Sequence Stratigraphy/Sedimentology

  • sedimentology
  • sequence stratigraphic interpretation from seismic/well data
  • chronostratigraphic analysis (Wheeler diagrams) in 2D and 3D
  • backstripping and decompaction in 1D and 3D

Petroleum Systems Analysis

  • thermal/maturity modelling in 3D
  • fluid flow modelling
  • prediction of hydrocarbon accumulations

Geodynamics

  • flexural isostatic modelling in 2D and 3D

Field-based Training

  • the Group offers petroleum-related field courses to various areas in the UK, Europe and the USA

Extensional Tectonics in the Field – BGS School of Field Geology

  • Members of the group collaborate with the British Geological Survey to offer training in extensional tectonics under the banner of the BGS School of Field Geology.
