Yaman's Biography:

"I hold a BSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, a PG Diploma in Automation and Intelligent Building Design, and I am currently pursuing PhD studies in Sustainability and Green Technologies at Keele University. My research project focuses on investigating the energy management challenges in Higher Education Institute buildings in England within the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and net-zero ambitions."

Project Description:

"The Higher Education (HE) sector in England holds a unique position in responding to Climate Change and supporting the UK in achieving its carbon reduction targets. Through its globally recognized research and teaching, the sector has significantly contributed to the development of science and solutions for mitigating and adapting to climate change. However, as substantial energy consumers and carbon emitters, there is an increased expectation for more proactive actions from these institutions. The primary objective of this study is to comprehend the impact of various factors, including finance, management, occupants' energy behaviour and space functionalities, on meeting carbon reduction targets within the university campus context, while considering the disruptions caused by the pandemic. The study also aims to investigate how these institutions are aligning with net-zero targets, explore the motivations behind adopting such targets, identify the challenges they face, and analyse the factors facilitating their progress."

The following summarise my research topic and questions:

The challenges of energy management operations in Higher Education Institute buildings in England in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and net zero ambitions.

Research questions:

  1. What do these universities undertake to implement carbon reduction?
  2. What are the main challenges, drivers and supporting factors impacting carbon management in HEIs before the pandemic?
  3. What is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and energy crisis on carbon management in the HEIs?
  4. How are these universities moving toward net zero target, what are the challenges, drivers and supporting factors?
