    Course Overview

    This practice focused module aims to equip healthcare practitioners in a range of settings with the knowledge and skills to confidently assess, manage and treat a variety of common minor injury conditions.

    Overview

    This practice focused module aims to equip healthcare practitioners in a range of settings with the knowledge and skills to confidently assess, manage and treat a variety of common minor injury conditions.

    A blended learning approach will be adopted which utilises focused lectures, skills teaching and practice, on-line learning and in collaboration with a clinical mentor, the application of clinical skills into the clinical practice setting. Module content will include history taking and consultations skills, assessment and management of upper and lower limb injuries, head injuries and wound assessment as well as professional issues surrounding this advancing role.

    This multifaceted approach will meet the needs of healthcare practitioners by providing an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills that underpin the assessment and management of minor injury conditions as well as encourage critical thinking and decision making. The module will also promote both professional and academic development.

    This module is useful for practitioners who wish to increase confidence in the assessment and management of minor injury conditions but also those who want to aspire to, or who currently work within, a practitioner level role.

    Module aims

    The aim of this module is to promote evidenced based assessment and management of patients presenting with minor injury conditions by enhancing knowledge and skills and promoting safe, accurate assessment and clinical decision making.

    Entry requirements

    • All candidates will have a Nurse or AHP qualification with current registration with the NMC or HCPC. 
    • Candidates will also require access to a suitable clinical environment and a mentor willing to supervise them in practice and sign off competence.
     

    Module content

    This module will include the following elements and skills acquisition in relation to the assessment and management of patients with minor injury conditions:

    • History taking/consultation skills
    • Upper limb injuries
    • Lower limb injuries
    • Neck and Back
    • Head and face injuries
    • Wound assessment and management
    • Basic radiology
    • Professional issues and role development - decision making and accountability
     

    Teaching and assessment

    The principal learning and teaching methods used in the module may include:

    • Lectures, seminars and workshops: The core of each module delivery mode is a series of face to face tutor-led or group-led seminars or workshops.
    • Web-based learning using the Keele Learning Environment (KLE), Blackboard. 
    • Group work and peer support. All modules use focused group work and class discussions within face to face tutor time.
    • Directed independent study - most of the study hours for each module comprise independent learning by expecting participants to add depth and breadth to their knowledge of topics, to practice skills and to reflect on critical incidents and their practice. 
     

    Please note: In your programme you may sometimes be expected to role play and engage in simulated clinical scenarios with other students, such as the practice and observation of practical skills in physical contact with other students. For some specific practices, this may necessitate modification of dress - e.g., to shorts and t-shirt. These activities will be conducted in a professional, safe, respectful and culturally sensitive way, under the supervision of academic staff, according to a defined protocol. This does not apply to Clinical Pharmacy practice modules as all of these modules are distance learning.
