Course Overview
This module explores the core concepts associated with change so as to enable students to effectively manage the behavioural and organisational issues associated with audit and quality improvement programmes.
Overview
All healthcare organisations are dependent on their staff, so how do you get the best from them? This module explores the core concepts associated with change so as to enable students to effectively manage the behavioural and organisational issues associated with audit and quality improvement programmes.
The aim is for students to (i) develop strategies and actions and (ii) be able to apply a range of different tools and techniques which together enable them to contribute to the successful delivery of sustainable change across professional, functional and hierarchical boundaries.
Module aims
The module aims to explore the core concepts associated with managing change and quality improvement. This will enable students to manage the more complex behavioural and organisational issues of change so that they can energise individuals and groups to deliver change and improvement across diverse professional, functional and hierarchical boundaries.
Entry requirements
Healthcare professional with first degree or equivalent professional experience.
Module content
This module explores the core concepts associated with change and quality improvement to enable students to manage the more complex behavioural and organisational issues of change.
The module encompasses the following core topics:
• Quality improvement in healthcare (a summary of policy and practice)
• Exploring change and change management tools and techniques
• An appreciation of the distinction between leadership and management and the implications for those leading and managing change
• Change within professional groups, networks and organisations
• Understanding motivation and overcoming resistance
• Influence, communication and negotiation
• Dealing with difficult people
• Building sustainable change
Teaching and assessment
The teaching programme will include small group work, expert presentations and student led sessions/activities. The module will adopt a blended approach in terms of delivery, combining face to face sessions with group and individual activities to be undertaken through the Keele Learning Environment (KLE).
2500 word essay which requires students to demonstrate a critical understanding of change and change management within healthcare and the ability to apply their learning to a specific scenario/problem.
