Course Overview
This module provides opportunities to practice the scientific method and study in detail the science and research methodologies underpinning our understanding of the morphological basis of health sciences.
Overview
This module provides opportunities to practice the scientific method and study in detail the science and research methodologies underpinning our understanding of the morphological basis of health sciences. Activities will include supervised laboratory work and experience with a number of practical techniques. It has been devised to be attractive to students interested in either clinical or research activities. It will be of interest to those who want to know more about such techniques and those aspiring to push the boundaries of knowledge in applied morphology. It is assessed partly on the basis of lab work, self directed study and group presentations, supported by posters or PowerPoint.
Module aims
The aim of this module is to provide a theoretical basis for and practical training in anatomical/morphological investigation, imaging and research methods from whole body to subcellular level.
Entry requirements
First degree in biological science, healthcare or related subject, including first MB or equivalent.
Module content
This module will be delivered through lab based sessions looking at different techniques of practical morphology and imaging (e.g. whole body methods, preparing, staining and analysing tissues). In addition there will be workshops and group discussions, peer led journal club discussions and presentations. This is a practical module which will involve high contact hours and engagement in practical activities and project work. Students will also engage in self directed study supported by the KLE.
