Erasmus+ Grant

The Erasmus+ programme enables you to undertake either a study or traineeship placement at a European university or organisation. To be eligible for this grant, traineeships placements must be at least 60 days and study placements 90 days long. Eligible students receive an Erasmus+ grant provided by the European Commission - this is paid through Keele. The grant contributes towards the costs of studying abroad.

Any student undertaking an eligible Erasmus+ placement endorsed by their Keele School is eligible for an Erasmus+ Grant provided the placement meets the criteria set by the European Commission. The table below provides basic grant eligibility information:

Multiple Placements

Students may now receive 360 days maximum Erasmus+ funding per each cycle of study. E.g. During UG study, then PGT/R.

This can be a combination of study/traineeships but the maximum number of placement months that can be funded per academic cycle (Bachelor/Master/PhD) is 360 days.

Students can undertake any combination of placements, provided the minimum duration for each placement is met and the maximum 12 months overall is not exceeded. Students would usually only be funded for 2 placements per year.

Disability and Special Needs funding

Disability and Special Needs funding is available to support students who require additional financial support that would otherwise prevent them from undertaking an Erasmus+ mobility. Each application is assessed based on the student’s requirements and certain other criteria by the British Council; funding cannot be guaranteed. The allowances are offered when additional support needs would lead to additional costs to go abroad which would exceed the normal grant allocation amounts that cannot be covered from other sources. The grant covers approved costs.

There is a separate application process provided by the British Council for students with disabilities. Students can access additional funding to cover any costs associated with their disability.

Any student undertaking an eligible placement will be automatically eligible for the Erasmus+ Grant, there is no formal application process. The Global Opportunities Team will ask you to confirm details of your placement in order to produce your paperwork. However, in order to receive the funding, you must complete paperwork within a set timeframe. This includes:

Before Mobility

  • Grant Agreement outlining the number of months and days of the placement and total funding allocated (produced by the Global Opportunities Team and signed by the student)
  • Learning Agreement confirming the programme of study in three stages, Before mobility, During mobility and After mobility. This includes a template to change modules during the mobility placement
  • Online Linguistic Support (OLS) assessment. This is done before and after the mobility and is sent from an EU run platform based on the language to be used during the mobility

During Mobility

  • Arrival Certificate
  • Learning Agreement (changes only)

After Mobility

  • Departure Certificate
  • Transcript/Recognition Document or Traineeship Certificate
  • Final Report (sent by the British Council directly to the student).

These documents are non-negotiable and must be completed before any payments can be made. If paperwork is not submitted, you may be required to pay all or some of the funding back to Keele University.
