Overview

The module will provide learning opportunities to any health professional involved in the care of people of all ages with mental health problems in any health or social care setting. 

It provides an excellent learning experience for practitioners who would like to professionally update or pursue a Master's degree.

Module aims

This module will allow you to examine the principles of mental health assessment, across a range of age groups and mental health problems. 
Participation on the module will enable you to develop knowledge and understanding in relation to the presentation of mental illness and the available evidence based assessment tools to facilitate practice assessment.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally hold current registration with an appropriate professional body, and be working in an appropriate clinical environment.

• Biopsychosocial models of mental illness 
• Family theories and the development of mental illness 
• The consequence of mental illness across the life-span 
• Stepped care approaches to mental well-being 
• Recovery based approaches to mental well-being 
• Determinants of mental well-being 
• Health Promotion techniques

Teaching and assessment

A blended learning strategy has been adopted to address the learning needs of a variety of students and make efficient use of renewable sources. 

• Scheduled learning/teaching hours: 48 hours, broken down as:
• Synchronous/In-situ: 24 hours
• Group work: 12 hours
• Assessment support (workshops): 12 hours including mock presentations to practice presentation skills
• Independent study 192 hours: students will be provided with a range of learning resources (micro-lectures, reading, videos, tasks) to guide them through their independent studies.
