Course Overview
This module offers an insight into key examination skills at an enhanced level. The module will support the underpinning theory to assessment and examination of adult patients within the clinician’s care.
Overview
An introduction to adult physical assessment relates to cardiovascular, respiratory and abdominal presentations and a focused approach to some neurological presentations e.g., Stroke, TIA and Dementia Care. The module includes comprehensive history taking, awareness and critical evaluation of the evidence base and current research supporting the management of patients presenting with commonly seen conditions related to cardiac, respiratory and abdominal systems. Recognition and appropriate response and management including the understanding of clinical observations, track and trigger systems, clinical reasoning, decision making and prioritisation of care for patients are discussed. Professionalism, related policy, effective and timely communication and referral are included.
Entry requirements
The applicant will normally hold a professional registration with an appropriate body and be working within a care setting relevant to the module.
Teaching and assessment
The module has a clinical focus incorporating case studies to apply underpinning theory to the assessment and examination of the cardiac, respiratory, and abdominal systems in adult patients. The module is delivered mostly online with the addition of clinical skills days to support the development of examination skills. The assessment consists of a 45-minute OSCE related to a scenario and the presentation of a case study related to the students area of clinical practice.
