Medical Record Data Research

The School of Primary, Community and Social Care has an expanding and diverse programme of research utilising databases of routinely collected medical record data, overseen by the Institute’s Prognosis and Consultation Epidemiology Research Group.
The primary care databases utilised include the regional Consultations in Primary Care Archive (CiPCA) and the national Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), as well as medical record data linked to self-reported survey data in research participants consenting to such linkage.
We have many peer-reviewed publications utilising routinely recorded medical record data, which have been cited widely including in guidelines for the management of musculoskeletal conditions. Data compiled from CiPCA was used by the national charity, Arthritis Research UK, in their policy report on the prevalence of osteoarthritis in the UK.
We have developed code lists and algorithms for a range of morbidities, managements and outcomes which we are keen to share with other researchers provided due acknowledgement is given.
