Commercial Clinic

We are able to advise clients in relation to their business entities, directors duties, terms and conditions of business and in some cases can advise on contracts for the provision of goods and/or services. This commercial legal work experience provides an introduction to the work commonly done by general commercial lawyers at many law firms and provides a valuable legal service to start ups and SMEs.

The Commercial Clinic was previously based on campus at Smart Innovation Hub (Denise Coates Foundation Building). However, in harmony with courts, law firms and barristers' chambers, from the summer of 2020 we moved entirely online. This allows all our Student Advisers to be fully involved in advising clients and to experience first-hand the current reality for the legal profession.

The remit of the legal advice is providing businesses with basic employment law, drafting contracts of employment and advising on restrictive covenants from existing or recently terminated contracts. Also, Student Advisers can review - or even draft - terms and conditions of business and advise on business entities.

Student Advisers will be taking initial instructions, drafting attendance notes, letters of advice and basic documentation under supervision of a solicitor employed by the University.
