PPIE in research

The Research User Group was set up in 2006, with members who have experience of long-term conditions, are carers or close relatives of someone with a long-term condition. It is vital that we listen to the people who live with these conditions on a daily basis in order to produce the very best research evidence possible.

Facts and figures

The roles of a RUG member can include:

  • ‌Advising on research design
  • Reading and giving feedback on research materials (e.g., questionnaires, letters to patients, consent forms)
  • Commenting on new research proposals
  • Membership of project steering committee’s
  • Co-applicants within grant submissions
  • Team members within research studies

Members of the RUG also represent the Centre at meetings with outside organisations such as:

  • National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
  • Versus Arthritis
  • Diabetes UK
  • Breathe Easy North Staffordshire
  • NIHR School for Primary Care Research
