O'Brian Anne

Since joining the School of Health and Rehabilitation in 1998, I have worked in varying School roles including Programme Lead, Year Head and Exams Officer and I am currently School Director of Learning and Teaching. I work part-time in this role and part-time research fellow in the Research Institute for Primary Care and Health Sciences, also at Keele University.

A Senior Lecturer since 2012, I teach across several faculty undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. From 2002-2015 I have been joint course Director of ASPIRE; an inter-disciplinary PG rheumatology programme run with the School of Nursing and Midwifery. My clinical area of interest is arthritis and in particular inflammatory arthritis having worked clinically for 15 years as a Clinical Specialist Rheumatology Physiotherapist.

I am currently researching "The assessment and management of Polymyalgia Rheumatica from the Patient and Physiotherapist's perspective" in my role as Clinical Academic Doctoral Research Fellow. I continue to be involved in national and regional related research projects including the development and validation recently of a patient reported experience measure (PREM) for patients with rheumatic conditions. I have published four chapters in rheumatology textbooks, most recently in "Rheumatology - Evidence-based Practice for Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists" and an overview of Physiotherapy in the “Oxford Textbook of Rheumatology”.

Having successfully been awarded an NIHR Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship in 2015, I am currently researching the role of physiotherapy and exercise in particular in the management of polymyalgia rheumatica as part of my doctoral studies. Previously awarded a Master of Philosophy Degree in 2002, I undertook a randomised controlled trial into the conservative management of hand therapy approaches in rheumatoid arthritis. I have presented both my clinical and educational research at the World Congress of Physiotherapy, Physiotherapy UK, American College of Rheumatology, European League against Rheumatism and British Society of Rheumatology and Midlands Rheumatology Society conferences over the past 16 years. Following my MPhil I was the proud recipient of the Silver Medal Prize for the best Allied Health Professional Research from the British Health Professionals in Rheumatology and Arthritis Research Campaign.

I gained both an Associate Teacher Certificate and Post-graduate Certificate in 1999 and 2000 (Teaching and Learning in Higher Education). In 2011 I obtained a Leadership and Management award (ILM). I am an approved external examiner for the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and am a current external examiner for the University of Central Lancashire. More recent pedagogic research has included an exploration of how in the West Midlands Healthcare programmes are developing leadership within their undergraduate programmes.

I am a member of the Health Professions Council, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, the British Health Professionals in Rheumatology and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. For five years I was a member of the Education Sub-Committee for Arthritis Research UK (formerly known as ARC).For the past twelve years I have contributed as a Physiotherapy Representative on the Editorial board of the “Musculoskeletal Care” Journal. I have been the Physiotherapy Representative on the West Midlands Rheumatology Forum steering committee and have recently chaired on behalf of the British Society of Rheumatology, some Best Practice Award Presentations. Most recently I have been an Invited HCPC reviewer for another UK BSc Hons Physiotherapy Programme re-approval event. I continue to be involved in several national and regional rheumatology research projects.
