Module Learning Outcomes

The students should be able to:

  • Discuss the pathology and symptomatology of joint dysfunction
  • Identify clinical presentations, analyse complex pathological presentations and their symptomatology in relation to establishing a clinical diagnosis
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge base of anatomy, physiology, tissue biomechanics, and concepts in pain in relation to joint dysfunction
  • Demonstrate a Master's level of skill in analytical examination, differential testing and assessment of joint dysfunction and recoding patient data
  • Justify clinical decisions, incorporating assessment modification, dictated by the interpretation of assessment findings and guided by continuous analytical evaluation and reflection
  • Demonstrate a high level of skill in the implementation of manual therapy assessment modalities, including the evaluative approach to indications, contraindications and precautions
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills, justify clinical decision-making and evaluate clinical outcomes
  • Critically discuss good clinical practice for joint dysfunction in the light of up to date standards and guidelines
  • Critically appraise current literature in the field of joint dysfunction, and discuss the issues involved in researching manual therapy concepts

Module Aims

  • To broaden the student's knowledge in the areas of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology, symptomatology and mechanisms of pain in specific areas
  • To facilitate the student’s ability to demonstrate appropriate interpretation of assessment findings, clinical reasoning, differential diagnosis and decision making in the field of joint dysfunction
  • To promote the student’s reflective approach to examination and assessment of joint dysfunction
  • To enable the student to perform a high level of skill in manual therapy examination and assessment procedures and adapt these appropriately to specific cases of joint dysfunction
  • To promote critical appraisal of theories and current research in the field of manual therapy

Entry Requirements

The course is aimed at newly qualified physiotherapists who have some clinical experience treating patients with joint dysfunction at undergraduate level. It would also be suitable for therapists returning to the profession following a break from practice. In addition, it would be a useful module for therapists who wish to further develop their skills or to consolidate their knowledge.

Candidates should normally have a first or second-class honours degree in a relevant subject which includes knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology and pain.

Module Content

The content below will be in relation to joint dysfunction:

  • Revision of anatomy, physiology, tissue biomechanics, psychosocial issues and concepts of pain. Pathology, symptomatology and identification of clinical syndromes where appropriate
  • Updating and improving existing skills in analytical patient examination and assessment
  • Differential diagnosis, clinical reasoning and methods of evaluation of clinical outcomes
  • Critical evaluation of research into manual therapy concepts and associated issues of researching in this area

Teaching Format

Block sessions: Lead lectures, workshops, practical sessions and tutorials. Reflective case studies incorporating interpretation of assessment findings, clinical reasoning, differential diagnosis and decision making. Resources are available for self-directed psychomotor practice within the School. The student will be expected to do some self study work to present within the sessions.
