This cherry was first mentioned in 1823 at the Harano Shrine in Kyoto. It is named after an western suburb of Kyoto along the Oi River, famed for its cherry blossom and mountain scenery.

It forms a spreading medium-sized tree with bright pink buds, opening to corymbs or umbels of semi-double white flowers edged with pink, slightly fragrant, opening flat, c.4 cm across in mid April.
