Margaret Whieldon 1918 - 1980

Caretaker, with her husband Harold, of Horwood Hall

An avenue of Hybrid Cockspur Thorns Crataegus x lavallei was planted by the Keele road at the end of Keele Drive, square D6. A plaque reads "This avenue was planted in memory of Margaret Whieldon 1918 - 1980 who did so much for university, church and village". A replacement plaque was installed in 2023.

Malcolm Clarke writes:

Margaret was a domestic supervisor in Horwood Hall and her husband Harold was caretaker in Horwood, having worked for UCNS since it was founded, originally as the college bus driver. Their Horwood bungalow was "open house" to any students or staff - the kettle was always on. Margaret provided loving support to any student in need of it, be it for lonliness, exam stress, relationship breakdown or whatever. They also contributed to the village community being active members of St.John's church and Harold became a local councillor for the village.
