The Centre for Social Policy includes social scientists working in all three faculties within the University. The Centre brings together a number of research active groups. These presently cover research in the field of Social Geography, Criminology, Education, Public Policy, Social Gerontology, Sociology and Social Work. Across these disciplines research focuses on community, mobilities and identities Current research activities within the Centre include: research on educational policy and leadership; advocacy for children and young people; assessment and interventions in child abuse; social policy and lone mothers; changing family structures; public participation in the development of health policy; race and ethnicity in the welfare state; psycho-social aspect of racially motivated crime; historical perspectives on crime and punishment; critical criminology; urbanisation and urban space; domestic consumption; sociology of globalisation; gay and lesbian studies; community and transnational migration; youth volunteering; environmental gerontology; social work and older people; retirement communities. Research in the Centre is currently supported through major funding from the British Academy, ESRC, MRC and the Joseph Rowntree Trust. In the 2008 RAE Keele's Social Policy submission was rated in the sector top 12 (/68) (GPA 2.75) 65% 3/4*. Postgraduate students are encouraged to apply from the any of the centre's constitute disciplines.
