Julie undertook her RGN training at the North Staffordshire College of Nursing and Midwifery and has since worked in North Staffordshire and Cheshire, in a variety of roles, in both primary and secondary care. Julie's secondary care experience has focused on Intensive Care and High Dependency areas and her primary care experience as both a District Nurse and a Discharge Liaison Nurse throughout Stoke-on-Trent. Prior to joining the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Julie worked as a District Nursing Sister in South Stoke Primary Care NHS Trust and represented her colleagues as a Nurse Representative on the Primary Care Trust Executive Board for four years.
Julie was initially employed as a Clinical Skills Lecturer. A post she undertook for three years. In September 2006 Julie became a Lecturer in the Adult nursing team. Julie is a Module Lead for Module 7 / D, a module that focuses on the Primary / Secondary Care Interface and also delivers a number of sessions across all branches and with the Learning Beyond Registration curriculum.
Julie is an affiliate member of the Primary Care and Health Sciences Research Institute and has particular research interests in all aspects of primary care nursing, especially wound care. Julie completed a research project for her MSc which reviewed the communication needs of cancer patients in the primary care setting. Julie is now undertaking her PhD on a part time basis funded by a West Midlands Strategic Health Authority award. For her PhD Julie is exploring health related quality of life issues and chronic venous leg ulceration.
Julie has particular interest in community nursing practice and holds an honorary contract with North Staffordshire Primary Care NHS Trust. Julie regularly accompanies pre-registration students on patient visits whilst they are on placement and is currently undertaking fieldwork in the community.
