History and Communication Technology

Historians argue that new forms of media have been responsible for the most significant aspects of historical change. The printing press revolutionised communication from the 16th century; but it was the explosion in public printed materials in the 19th century and the emergence of new forms of journalism and mass press from 1900 onwards that reached the ‘person in the street’. What is the significance of these printed materials for the historian?
In this session we will use examples of a ‘new’ mass communication technology, postcard, to examine how they were used over the past century and how they can be used by historians trying to reconstruct the everyday life of the people who made use of them. This is an opportunity for you to be a historian, selecting actual postcards from an ‘archive’ and trying to make sense of them as a historical source.
