I took up my post here at Keele after taking my PhD as a mature student.  My role here is to prepare and demonstrate second year ceutics laboratory classes.  I also train fourth year students to use instruments and equipment for their projects.

Prior to this I was employed in pharmaceutics and personal care formulation.  I performed a number of different functions in dyes, pigments and fine chemicals manufacture, such as research, process optimisation and analysis.  It was very satisfying see my work incorporated into the concrete and steel of new plants or a new seeing a new product go to market.

My PhD in “Amorphous Pharmaceutical Materials” was supported by a pharmaceutical inhaler manufacture.  This work produced methods for quantifying amorphous content in salbutamol sulphate and α-lactose monohydrate using Dynamic Vapour Sorption and 13C Cross Polarised Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.  I also in investigated the properties of amorphous lactose prepared by different methods.  In addition to the techniques already mentioned I used to Powder X-Ray Diffraction, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy to characterise the crystalline polymorphs of amorphous lactose after sorption by water.

Air quality has been a major interest, I have developed GC-MS methods using thermal desorption sampling techniques to measure parts per billion for many small volatile organic molecules.
