Black Cat Art Collective: Re-Historicising Jacob Epstein and Princess Margaret

The great artists Frida Kahlo, Ernest Hemingway, Ai Weiwei, Salvador Dali, Karl Lagerfield, David Bowie and Marilyn Monroe were all owned by their cats and so when choosing a name for the meet-ups Black Cats Art Collective was born. The Black Cats Art Collective engage critically and creatively with varied forms of visual art through a series of monthly workshops. The sessions are devised and led by Prea Kaur and Danielle Wallace, both postgraduates at Keele University.

Re-Historicising Jacob Epstein and Princess Margaret
We will be contextualising and revisiting three busts held at Keele University that were created by Epstein. The most prolific bust is of Princess Margaret, which received both positive and negative criticism due to its unruly and unorthodox depiction. To comprehend Epstein’s style and his need to demand presence over presentation, not only will we examine the busts of Sonia Heath and Lord Lindsay of Birker (both held at Keele) but also The Visitation (1926) and Lucifer (1947). .
