KeeleSU’s new coffee bar celebrates innovative green credentials with eco cups

Posted on 04 October 2012

The Students’ Union’s brand new coffee bar, Blend, is welcoming students to the new academic year with coffee served in compostable cups.

The cups, branded to match the coffee bar itself, are made of two layers of sustainably-sourced paper board, bonded together with a water-based resin and lined with GM-free cornstarch. The ink is water-based or vegetable and being compostable; the cups can be composted together with food waste, turning into nutrient-rich fertiliser in 5-12 weeks.

Blend, which opened to students last week as part of the university’s £5 million re-development programme can be found in the centre of the Students’ Union’s newly refurbished Ground Floor area, and has had fantastic feedback from students and staff alike to this award-winning product.

Alex Clifford, Vice President Welfare of the Students’ Union said of the initiative; “The Elected Officers are very proud of KeeleSU’s innovative environmental credentials, in line with the University’s wider sustainability agenda.  It’s all part of our long-term commitment to becoming a greener organisation that cares about the impact it has on our beautiful campus environment.”
