Midwifery BSc (Hons)

Midwifery is a professional practice requiring the ability to provide empathetic and responsive care to childbearing women and their families. Midwives contribute to public health outcomes through education and preventive interventions and undertake confident and well-informed clinical decision-making, working autonomously and in teams. Midwifery practice entails mastery of a range of skills for effective clinical care, communication and teamwork. This is achieved through collaboration with women and families, colleagues and members of multidisciplinary teams involved in providing maternity and other health care to women and families.

This is a full time, three-year, Single Honours degree programme leading to the award of BSc (Hons) in Midwifery and professional midwifery registration (RM). Each year of the programme is 45 weeks long, with seven weeks of set annual leave. The programme consists of both classroom-based, directed and self-directed study and learning in the practice setting under the supervision of midwife mentors, who will facilitate practice learning opportunities and support development of the student’s skills and confidence.

The Maternity Unit of the University Hospital of North Staffordshire is one of the largest in the country with approximately 5,800 deliveries per year. The unit consists of a Midwifery-led Unit for women with uncomplicated pregnancies, as well as Consultant-led care. It also has a large Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and occupies a ‘state of the art‘ building opened in June 2009.

This course will provide students with a sound knowledge base to underpin their practice including anatomy, physiology, psychology, ethical and legal principles, social dimensions of all facets of childbirth and fetal/infant development as well as the full range of clinical skills demanded of the practising midwife. Students will develop their ability to reflect on and learn from their own experience and to evaluate and accommodate the policies and social contexts within which they work. They will be prepared to contribute constructively to the continuing development of maternity services and public health services and will have the foundation to assume leadership roles in the future.

Each year of study is comprised of a single 120 credit module of study, which encompasses learning organised according to five themes:

The art and science of midwifery

  • The social context of childbearing
  • Personal and professional development
  • Ethical and legal principles of professional practice
  • Midwifery practice
