Faculty of Natural Sciences Outreach
The Faculty of Natural Sciences covers subjects including astrophysics, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computing, environment & sustainability, forensics, geography, geology, mathematics, physics and psychology. We offer a diverse portfolio of outreach events including crime scene investigation, fireworks and earthquakes. We also provide access to our astronomical observatory and electron microscope unit.
The Faculty of Natural Sciences offers a large range of workshops and outreach events that can be tailored to suit your particular needs across a broad spectrum of subjects.
In Chemistry we offer sessions including fireworks and explosions involving experiments with colourful and explosive chemical reactions, spectroscopy involving analysis of substances such as aspirin using infrared and nuclear resonance spectroscopy, and thin layer chromatography where students are welcome to bring their own samples for analysis. We also host the Make-it-Molecular project.
Your own samples can also be imaged at our electron microscope unit (we will provide guidance on what is suitable and how to prepare them in advance). This can be combined with a visit to Life Sciences where you will have the chance to use spirometry equipment or record the electrical activity of the heart and the effect of exercise.
Forensics offer sessions on examining documents for forgeries, matching forensic samples with a microscope, fingerprinting with a chance to take your own prints and making molecules of crime where you choose a molecule to make and have your picture taken with it.
The effects of glaciers and ice ages on the British landscape and examining the effects and consequences of earthquakes and tsunamis are workshops offered in Geography, Geology and the Environment. They also host the KAP-SEIS schools seismology project that helps schools to record and analyse earthquakes, and the Science for Sustainability project that runs workshops on climate change and sustainable energy.
Physics and Astrophysics offer workshops in magnetism and optics along with access to the newly refurbished astronomical observatory that is equipped with solar telescopes and spectroscopy equipment for daytime activities.
Mathematics and Psychology both offer bespoke workshops for curriculum enrichment to suit your particular needs. Maths have also recently become a hub for the Fun Maths Roadshow.
There may be the possibility of providing specialist workshops in any science subject - you just have to ask!
Please note that for certain activities it is necessary to make a charge to cover the materials used.
