Music Library
The Music Library is located on the top floor of the Campus Library building. It contains books, pamphlets and printed music as well as a silent study area. Some key music texts can also be found in the Short Loan section of the Library on the middle floor.

JSTOR
JSTOR is a searchable full text archive of over 130 important journals. In addition Keele subscribes to JSTOR Music, a collection of over 30 titles including Music & Letters and The Musical times.

Naxos 
Naxos is a large online music library offering over 500,000 tracks of classical music, jazz, world and folk music. The recordings in Naxos Music Library include the complete catalogues of BIS, Chandos, CPO, Haenssler, Hungaroton, Marco Polo, Naxos and selected titles of other leading independent labels.
Naxos can be accessed from all computers on the Keele network.

Oxford Music Online 
Includes The New Grove Dictionary of Music and MusiciansThe Oxford Companion to MusicThe Oxford Dictionary of MusicThe New Grove Dictionary of Opera and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz. There is also biographical information about performers, composers and writers. Articles link to the RILM Abstracts of Music Literature database.

Searching for Journal Articles

Databases and E-Journal Collections

You can search or browse these online collections to find e-journal articles.

In some cases the full-text of an article will be available directly from your search results to view online. If the full-text isn't available from your search results, look for the @Keele logo and click this. This will search all our e-journal collections and provide a link to the whole paper if available, or direct you to where a paper copy may be found in the Library's print journal collection.

EBSCO
Academic Search Complete contains the full text of over 8500 journals covering almost every area of academic study.
You will need your Keele username and password password to access the EBSCO databases from off-campus.

ProQuest 
Includes access to the British Humanities Index, an international abstracting and indexing tool for research in the Humanities. It indexes around 400 Humanities journals from the UK and other English-speaking countries. NEW: It also contains RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, a database of musicology writings including journal articles, dissertations, books, recordings and critical commentaries.You will need your Keele username and password to access ProQuest from off-campus.

The e-journals listed below are just a few of the relevant titles which the Library provides access to. Please see our e-journals search to find out what other titles are available.

From off-campus you will need to log-in to access the full-text of articles within these journals. Look out for a link called “institutional log-in” or "Shibboleth log-in", select the UK Federation and then Keele University and log in using your Keele username and password. Computer Music Journal
A leading publication about computer music, concentrating on digital sound technology and all musical applications of computers. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1997 to the present (with a 12 month embargo).  

Contemporary Music Review
Contemporary Music Review is concerned with music today in all its aspects - techniques of performance and composition, aesthetics, technology, and its relationship with other disciplines. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1984 to the present.

Music & Letters
Founded in 1920, Music & Letters is the leading British journal of musical scholarship. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1920 to 2001. 

Musical Times
The Musical Times is the oldest continuously-published music journal in the world. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 2003 to the present. Archive access to full-text articles from 1903 to 2003 is available through JSTOR.

Organised Sound
Organised Sound is an international peer-reviewed journal which focuses on the rapidly developing methods and issues arising from the use of technology in music today. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1998 to the present.  

Popular Music
An international multi-disciplinary journal covering all aspects of popular music. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 1981 to 2006. 

Twentieth Century Music
This journal explores Western art music, music from non-Western traditions, popular music, film music, jazz, improvised music, and performance practice. The full-text of articles in this journal are available online from 2004 to the present. 

E-book Collections

Music Books

Use the Library Catalogue to search for individual titles held by the Library.

In addition, several ebook collections are available for you to use. These allow you to read books in full, online.

Dawsonera
An expanding collection of ebooks purchased by the Library which includes some titles relating to Music and Music technology.

EBSCO Ebook Collection
A large collection of ebooks with texts on many aspects of Music.
You will need your Keele username and password for off-campus access.

MyiLibrary
A collection of ebooks purchased by the Library which includes some titles relating to Music and Music technology. The collection is developing and new titles will continue to be added.
You will need your keele username and password for off-campus access.

You may also like to look at Google Books. Whilst this does not provide access to the full text of many books, you can access limited previews for some titles.

ProQuest UK News Stand
Provides the searchable full-text of articles published in around 30 UK newspapers including The Times, Telegraph, Guardian and The Independent.

A news and business service which includes around 12,000 publications, including worldwide, national and local newspapers.

The Times Digital Archive
Search the complete digital edition of The Times from 1785-2006. The entire newspaper is captured with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos.

Theses

Use the advanced keyword search on the Library Catalogue and set the material type to 'thesis' to search for Keele these held in the Library.

ETHOS
The British Library ETHOS project provides electronic access to research theses from many UK universities.

Index to Theses
A searchable listing of theses with abstracts accepted for higher degrees by universities in Great Britain and Ireland since 1716. You can only access the Index to Theses from computers on the Keele network.

NDLTD – Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations
Details of theses and dissertations from universities in the United States and worldwide.

PhDData
An index of doctoral dissertations in progress around the world.

British Library Archival Sound Recordings
12,000 selected recordings of music, spoken word, and human and natural environments. You will need your ATHENS password to access the British Library Archival Sound Recordings.

Cecilia
Lists collections of music material in the UK, including libraries, museums, archives, institutions and societies. Collections include manuscripts, printed materials, recordings, artefacts and artworks, instruments, electronic resources, private papers and archives.

Classical Music Archives
Offers over 25,000 full length classical music files in MIDI and other formats.

Google Scholar
The most famous web search engine can search for academic journals and literature too.

Intute: Creative and Performing Arts
A free online search service providing you with access to quality Web resources for Music and other subjects.

Library of Congress American Memory Project
Not just music, but several music collections are available through this website.

Living Composers Project
A database of living composers that includes details of compositional output and links to composers' web pages.

Mutopia
Searchable database of music scores in the public domain.

RefWorks

Sound and Music
The UKs first national development agency for sound and music. Look in the resources section of the website for blogs, podcasts and articles and The Collection - an archive of over 40,000 scores and manuscripts from the past 30 years (some free to download).

Zetoc
Use this site to set up e-mail alerts to your inbox when new issues of journals are published. Zetoc will send you an e-mail containing the new issue’s table of contents.
