Advice and ideas on choosing a topic
There are two Geography Dissertation modules available.
- GEG-30008 is a single-module dissertation - 30 credits.
- GEG-30006 is a double-module dissertation - 15 credits.
These are level-3 (3rd-year) modules, but students start work on them in the spring semester of 2nd-year so that data collection can be carried out during the summer vacation before 3rd year if necessary.
All Geography students (on single honours, dual honours, and major routes) may choose either the single or the double module. The differences between the single and double dissertation are discussed later in this handbook. Students should make their choice carefully in discussion with their advisor. However, please note that Single Honours and Major Route students are ordinarily expected to undertake a double dissertation.
Students on the Dual Honours Geography, Human Geography or Physical Geography courses must take
- EITHER the single-module dissertation + 3 taught modules
- OR the double-module dissertation + 2 taught modules
Students on the Single Honours Geography or any of the Major Route Major courses must take
- EITHER the single dissertation module + 7 taught Geography modules
- OR the double dissertation module + 6 taught Geography modules.
Students on the MGeoscience course will not take a Geography Dissertation as part of their 3rd-year studies but will complete a 4th-year triple-module MGeoscience project, which can be developed from the Formal Proposal and Risk Assessment that students are required to complete as part of the Geography dissertation training in module GEG-20009.
Students not doing a Geography Dissertation but taking GEG-20009 (eg MGeoscience or Geology Single Hons. students) will be required to complete the training in dissertation planning (ie the Dissertation proposal forms 1 and 2 and the Risk Assessment) as part of GEG-20009.
