Sociology and Criminology: making a difference…
The School of Sociology and Criminology at Keele is staffed by a group of dynamic, research-active lecturers who engage in the world around them. Whether this is by helping students develop their knowledge of how society and justice operate; or by publishing research on important issues such as racism, fear of crime, globalisation or the changing family; or by getting involved and making a difference to community organisations: you can be sure that Keele offers a unique experience to those interested in making a difference.
We offer principal undergraduate subjects in Sociology, and in Criminology that you can study:
- separately in combination with a wide range of other subjects
- as part of a tailored specialist degree with a strong focus on one subject
- together as a dual honours degree in Sociology and Criminology, our most popular option.
We also contribute to the principal subject in Media, Communication & Culture
There are 23 members of teaching staff in the School, including 7 Professors, 9 Senior Lecturers and 7 Lecturers. All staff are research active, in either the Research Institute for Life Course Studies, or the Research Institute for Law, Politics & Justice (please follow the links for more information on research).
Our teaching is strongly linked to research, with specialist options taught by experts in their particular areas of study. However, we are also responsive to student demand, with specialist options in contemporary issues and areas of particular interest to undergraduates, including, for example, modules on Women and Crime, Witchcraft and the Occult, Sociology of the Body, Risk, and Crime and Popular Culture.
The School also offers a number of postgraduate options, including Masters’ programmes in Social Research, Urban Futures & Sustainable Communities, and Criminology & Criminal Justice; as well as Doctoral supervision. For more information please see our postgraduate page.
