Welcome to the National Pathology Benchmarking Service Website

The National Pathology Benchmarking Service at Keele University, established in 1994, has been developed in consultation with clinicians in each pathology discipline who are nominated by their respective professional bodies, and built around feedback from participants.

It is a non-competitive programme which promotes the sharing of best practice information, designed so that laboratories can identify their strengths and weaknesses, and use the data to help improve their service delivery.

As the world of pathology becomes increasingly pressurised by cost and performance issues, benchmarking has become an essential tool for managing service delivery. Lord Carter's second stage review of Pathology has also recommended that English laboratories participate in benchmarking, further increasing the need for those laboratories to become involved, and the new National Pathology Benchmarking Service offers the following benefits to help labs achieve this:

  • Shorter questionnaires which require less time to complete, and have eliminated much of the redundant information in favour of maximising data in more crucial areas
  • New lab-specific dashboards showing your main KPIs together in one easy-to-read page
  • Trend data for key measures to analyse changing practice and help laboratories plan for the future
  • Further development of the Blood Sciences combined questionnaire and report, which are a ‘free extra’ for anybody already subscribing to the Chemistry and Haematology reports
  • Full suite of analysis tools to provide users of all levels of competence with the ability to create the reports they need
  • Additional analysis for complete groups of laboratories, e.g. entire network/PCT/SHA etc (if you are interested in this, please contact us for further information)

Subscriptions for the 2011-2012 data collection has now closed. If you are interested in joining the scheme for the 2012-2013 data collection please register your interest by emailing your details to Andy Brooks (a.brooks1@keele.ac.uk) who will send you the appropriate information and forms to complete when they become available in the New Year.

The National Pathology Benchmarking Service is peer reviewed by Fellows of The Royal College of Pathologists, and also backed by The Association of Clinical Scientists (ACS) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
