An Introduction to Publishing BMJ Case Reports

Thinking of publishing in BMJ Case Studies but unsure where to begin? This 45-minute course will help you develop an understanding of what to include in your case study and where to submit. This session includes a quick demonstration of key websites and databases to help you add references to support your manuscript. Run by UHNM and Keele Librarians, this course will help you build your confidence and career portfolio. Certificates are provided upon completion.

Critical Appraisal; mitigating bias in health research

Critical Appraisal is a key skill but why is it so complicated? This 45-minute course run by UHNM and Keele Librarians will help build your confidence in appraising a RCT. By going through key strategies researchers use to mitigate bias will help you understand common themes that feature in quantitative studies. Such as selection bias, dealing with confounders, attrition, publication bias and data dredging. This session will touch on basic statistics, the use of P values, CI and consider MID/MICD in the paper. Further support materials and signposting will also be provided.  Certificates are provided upon completion if requested.

Searching Ovid Medline

Thinking of writing your own research paper but unsure where to begin? This one-hour course will help you develop a robust search strategy which can be transferred into other databases for maximum paper retrieval.  Run by UHNM and Keele Librarians, this course will help you build the ‘Literature review’ section of your paper using Ovid Medline.  

This course is aimed at NHS staff and Keele academics and researchers working on NHS projects. You will require an NHS OpenAthens username.

RCT Journal Club: Hints and Tips

A general overview of places to look for bias in a Randomised Control Trial for beginners. A useful recap for journal club members. The session touches on statistics and is intended to form part of the learner's journey rather than a comprehensive course.

Health Literacy Awareness

This session, accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health UK (RSPH), aims to: introduce you to the concept of health literacy; consider the impact low health literacy can have on your work, your patients, and the NHS; and explore practical methods that can be used to help improve health literacy and the patient experience.
