Athens for NHS Users
More help with Athens or try our Register with NHS Athens etutorial, including video demonstration
NHS Staff
Register: Valid users can register for an NHS Athens username. Check the eligibility criteria here. Register by completing this online form. This process is more efficient if you use an NHS network computer. If you use a non-NHS computer, for example at home, university or college, then you MUST use an NHS, academic or work-based email address. Any application using a personal email address will be automatically rejected. Successful applications will be sent an email containing an activation link - use this to set up your password. You must act on the activation email promptly as the activation code is only valid for a limited time and non-activated accounts are deleted on a regular basis.
Login: You can access all the online content available from our Health Information Resources page.
Password reset: You can reset your password if you forget it.
Accessing your Account Details: NHS Evidence have changed their website and a direct route to your Athens account is not available. I would recommend going to the Journals and Databases page, logging in via the Databases link, then use the "My Account" link at the top of the page to update your account details.
Keeping Your Athens Account Up-to-date: You should ensure that your email details kept on Athens are up-to-date. It is very important that you have a valid email address that you monitor regularly as this is where any system notifications will be sent and allows your Athens administrator to keep you up-to-date regarding any changes to resources. Users should respond to emails promptly to avoid loss of access. Please ensure that system emails are not being interpreted as spam of junk.
To change your details, login as above (Accessing your Account Details), click the “My Account” link at the top of the page and update your details as appropriate.
Changing your NHS organisation: If you are moving to or from another NHS organisation then you can take your NHS Athens account with you. Login as described above (Accessing your Account Details)? and click on the "My Account" link, then select the "Change your organisation" option. Here you will be able to select your new NHS organisation and update your work details - remember to change your email address. If you know that your Athens account will terminate as you change organisations it may be worth asking your Athens administrator for a short extension so that you can complete the transfer, likewise let your new Athens administrator know your new contract end-date.
Other Problems: If you have any other problems or need any help contact the e-Resources librarian.
Students on NHS Placement
Students on placement with the NHS are allowed an NHS Athens username and password in order to access NHS-subscribed resources for the organisation that they are on placement with. This is only available for the duration of your placement. This is known as an NHS Trust Athens account.
If you have an NHS-based email account you can register online immediately using your NHS-based email address. Note that you must monitor this email account. You will be sent an email to complete the registration process and update emails are also sent on a regular basis.
Otherwise please ask at the main counter for an application form or ask your tutor to contact the e-resources librarian. We can then set up an account for you manually.
Alternatively students can request an NHS Athens account by completing this online form
Again, we will manually create the account for you.
NHS-HE Athens for Students
Keele students on NHS-funded courses (medicine, midwifery, nursing and physiotherapy) are eligible for an NHS-HE Athens username and password. This will be available for the duration of your course and will provide you with access to NHS Core Content only. You will be informed of your account details via your university email account. Please note that these accounts are managed by the Campus Library and any queries should be directed to them.
Social Care Workers
Social Care workers in England can sign-up for a SCIE Athens username. This will give you access to Social Care Online as well as other resources including social care based ejournals and ebooks subscribed to by the Social Care Institute for Education. Please see the SCIE Athens web page for more details including eligibility, how to register and a full list of resources available. Please note that SCIE Athens usernames are not maintained by the Health Library.
