The original pioneer
Established over 70 years ago by the former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University, Keele created the blueprint for modern-day higher education in Britain. We’re unusual in being excellent at both teaching and research, with some of the most satisfied students in England, and research that is changing lives for the better.
600 acres to explore
We have one of the biggest campuses in Britain to explore, located in the Staffordshire countryside – but all accommodation, facilities including a medical centre and pharmacy, and teaching spaces are clustered around the centre, keeping campus facilities within walking distance. The Telegraph also name us as one of the top 10 'most beautiful universities' in Britain (2012). And as if that’s not enough, we’re just minutes from the market town of Newcastle-under-Lyme – with bars, cinema, and a renowned theatre – and a bus ride from the City of Stoke-on-Trent. Jump on the train and we’re less than an hour away from the bright lights of both Manchester and Birmingham too.
Our global impacting research
Our academics are leading the way in everything from climate change and sustainability to global health and food security, with research that creates a better world.
We're here for you
In the 1960s, Keele was the first UK university to introduce a counselling service - a concept which is now commonplace - and we’re now leading a new mental health and wellbeing initiative, working with the NHS to develop new and innovative approaches to student wellbeing and mental health that can be rolled out nationally to meet changing needs. We’re here when you need to talk.
Sector leaders in sustainability
We're proud to be one of the first UK universities to declare a 'climate emergency', as well as having ambitious targets to be carbon neutral by 2030. In 2021 we were named Global Sustainability Institution of the Year, and also completed the installation of 12,500 solar panels and two wind turbines on campus, to generate up to half of our electricity requirements. Find out more about our commitment to sustainability.
The blueprint for modern universities
Keele was founded to pursue a unique approach to scholarship and to create a model campus community - known as "The Keele Experiment", our creation attracted national attention and we even had our own primetime TV programme in the early 1970s!
