Gordon Rugg

Biography

My first degree was in French and Linguistics, from Reading University; my PhD was in Experimental Psychology, from Reading University. I have worked in a variety of fields, including English lecturing, field archaeology, artificial intelligence, information retrieval, and human factors. I am a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Keele University.

Research and scholarship

My current research interests include the following:

• Elicitation methods across disciplines, including e-commerce, healthcare, public opinion research and education
• Modeling knowledge, particularly semi-tacit and tacit knowledge.
• Methodological support for expert reasoning about hard problems, e.g. my work on the Voynich Manuscript, and my work with Sue Gerrard on autism.
• Teaching, training, and education theory, with particular reference to undocumented craft skills in expertise, and to the transmission of semi-tacit and tacit knowledge.

I am particularly interested in long-standing multidisciplinary problems which involve difficult theory and significant practical implications.

My work on modeling errors in expert reasoning has featured in several television documentaries, and in Scientific American. I am also interested in elicitation methods, methods for representation of information, education methods, and craft skills.
