Smart magnetic biomaterials

In the last decade, smart magnetic biomaterials have found an increasing number of applications in biomedicine. Thanks to their unique magnetic and physic-chemical properties especially in the shape of nanoparticle, together with the possibility of functionalising them with peptides and antibodies to target different regions in the body, these are used among as contrast agents in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), magnetic hyperthermia mediators to treat localised tumours, and as drug carriers to enhance the efficacy of traditional drugs among others. At Keele University, we focus our efforts in conceiving novel nanoparticles-based technologies for the treatment and diagnosis of cardiovascular, parasitic and infectious disease; as well as cancer disease.
